Miley Who? Taylor Momsen Is The Teen Star We Should Be Worried About

Miley Cyrus can’t catch a break. It seems like the world refuses to let her grow up. Everyone expects her to stay Hannah Montana forever, but it’s time to face the facts — it’s not going to happen.

She can’t be tamed, and the more she’s criticized, the more likely it becomes that she’ll lash out with more risque outfits and girl-on-girl kissing. Come on, she’s a 17-year-old teenage girl. They don’t want to be told what they can and can’t do. What’s really bizarre is why the world is so focused on her when there are other teen stars acting the same way. Honestly, ever since ‘Gossip Girl’ star Taylor Momsen started wearing excessive dark eye makeup, donning her now trademark thigh-high garters and declared her hatred for wearing pants, why have we accepted that it’s okay for this 16-year-old to be a role model … when Cyrus is criticized for taking a wrong breath. Both underage girls rose to fame as cute actresses and then decided to hit the mainstream music scene. For the record, Momsen is younger than Cyrus. Gasp! So what’s with the double standard?

Momsen started her career at age three with a national commercial for Shake ‘N’ Bake. In 2000, Momsen earned her first major role, playing Cindy Lou Who in ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ opposite Jim Carrey. She was so cute! Interestingly, she auditioned for the title role in ‘Hannah Montana’ and was in the top three, but the role was instead awarded to Cyrus. They’re not so different after all.

Momsen discussed her distaste for the show, calling it fate that she wasn’t picked. “Honestly, if I’d have ended up as Hannah Montana, I don’t know if the show would have gone as well. I probably would have told them all to go f**k themselves by the time I hit 11. And I don’t know how that would have gone down. It’s great for Miley, but I really like where I am right now, and I feel really fortunate to be able to really be myself,” she told StarPulse during a 2010 interview.

It all paid off in 2007 when she was cast as Jenny Humphrey in The CW series ‘Gossip Girl.’ As her character started to turn dark, Momsen seemed to transform her own life, giving up any good girl image that people may have tried to push on her.

Momsen’s transformation seemed to happen overnight. She traded in her long locks and frilly wardrobe for leather biker jackets, boots and necklaces in the shape of a revolver. In March 2009, Momsen and her band, The Pretty Reckless, were signed to Interscope Records. She wrote all of the songs, sang and played guitar on their debut album. And her new single is titled ‘Make Me Wanna Die.’ ‘Can’t Be Tamed’ seems rather tame in comparison. But be warned — don’t compare her to Courtney Love.

“I don’t wanna be Courtney Love — I wanna be Kurt Cobain. He’s brilliant and his songs are genius. The Hole records are great. Everyone always compares me to Courtney Love because they think we, like, dress the same and we both have blond hair, wear lipstick and dresses. But I’m sorry, don’t a lot of girls dress like that? I look at Nirvana. I don’t look at Hole,” she told EW in April.

And look at Momsen’s fashion. Now that’s hardcore. Her signature thigh-high garters, dark eye makeup and lack of pants are more rockstar than Cyrus will probably ever be. (Miley — that’s not a bad thing.) But do you really want your children looking up to her as a role model? She’s been photographed smoking cigarettes on set and in leaked photos. And she’s been seen drinking, making out with another girl and partying the night away.

But everyone seems to turn a blind eye on Momsen. The focus has instead been on why Cyrus isn’t allowed to pose in Vanity Fair, get a tattoo or kiss a girl without the world flailing their arms in disbelief and disgust. Without sounding too much like Chris Crocker, it is time to “Leave Miley alone!” If Momsen can “get away” with everything she’s doing, we need to stop judging these underage pop stars altogether and let them live their lives.

Hey, that’s the way the cookie crumbles. If anyone wants to point fingers who is responsible for the “shocking” character flips of any Disney character then blame the bland script writers at Disney who were pushing the Hannah Montana image. And why only Disney? So many people WANT to see and experience the qualities of a Hannah Montana young girl on television and the Big Screen, a “wholesome” character to feed the minds of the youngsters with, and the only big company is Disney pushing this type of young girl character on the masses. I would think given the demand, the want there would a half a dozen television shows from the major TV networks and Hollywood/New York movie producers. I mean, there is nothing wrong, nada! with vampires and werewolf shows but there is dozens of other kind of shows yet Hannah Montana type of shows and the characters THAT ALOT OF PEOPLE REALLY WANT TO SEE AND LIVE THEIR LIVES WITH, these shows and movies are once in a blue moon rarities. You know? People churn out these “wholesome” shows simply because the demand is there and so for greed. For money! To make money. But no group other than Disney is doing or did it … simply for money. Why? I’m not asking rhetorically. Why only Disney? And now that Miley Stewart is finished why aren’t the gears turning to simply churn out another similar future Hannah Montana-type youngster for some kids to watch and love and hang out with? I’m stumped for answers.
